![]() Now, Rambo simply wounded a lot of people, so that he could survive and possibly find a way to live with his actions at the end of the film. The resulting screenplay, which Stallone had a hand in, eliminated the killing. When the film finally went into production in 1981, Stallone, who had catapulted from wannabe screenwriter and actor to mega-stardom in the 1976 hit Rocky, took on the role of Rambo. Not long after it was published, Hollywood wanted the film rights, and Morrell watched with bemusement as various directors (Richard Brooks, Stanley Kramer, and Martin Ritt, for example) and movie stars (such as Steve McQueen, Robert Blake, and Paul Newman) were attached and unattached to the project. Soon, he uses his combat-honed skills to do away with police officers, civilians, and posse members in the backwoods of Kentucky as they first pursue him and then become the pursued. ![]() ![]() ![]() I feel like this world is getting complicated. The third book is the famed and beloved (I might be biased – deal with it) Devil in Winter, and those protagonists had five children, two of whom are (now) married to Ravenels. Now, if you know Kleypas, you know Merritt is the oldest daughter of the protagonists of It Happened One Autumn, which is the second book in the Wallflowers series. Just when we thought that the Ravenels series was finished – on account of, you know, the last known Ravenel finding her true love – Kleypas sends us a curveball by adding the story of Merritt Sterling nee Marsden. ![]() Overall: I re-upped my membership in the Bad Decisions Book Club for this one and read it in one sitting. In other words, this is part autobiography, part terrorism history and context. What sets this book apart, for better and worse, is that its focus and perspective is upon the intersection of Morrell's time with the CIA with the events he witnessed while there. I'd place Morell's right about in the middle of he pack in terms of its informative quality. I’m sure Morell is a skilled writer on his own but I have a feeling his co-author, Bill Harlow, provided some excellent input because the book reads like an all too real thriller. It helped me gain a handle on whom and what we are dealing with. ![]() One of the most instructive chapters was toward the end where Morell provides a mock (but true) terrorist assessment similar to what he and his cohorts give to the President. Obviously this is not a book that will help its readers sleep well at night other than to know there are some very capable people standing between America and some #(!* scary folks. The writing is amazing very clear and engaging and most important Morell always brings the individuals’ personality and character to the forefront which makes their motivations clear and no matter how unsympathetic human. I worried it would be too overtly political, too technical or just plain boring. Reads like a Chilling and all too Real ThrillerĪfter seeing former CIA Deputy Director and Author Michael Morell speak on a news show I sought out his book though with some reservations. ![]() ![]() Neither Ba nor her sweet sister Lily believe that there is anything strange happening.
